5 REASONS TO BUY THE HK TD420
FIVE FEATURES THAT MAKE THIS RARE CASSETTE DECK WORTH OWNING
Not all cassette decks are created equal. That’s made blatantly obvious by Harman/Kardon’s TD420.
Designed with precise engineering and understated elegance, the TD420 stands apart in both performance and build quality. Combining its outside appearance and its inside components, this HK cassette deck would be the feather in the cap of any audio system.
So let’s take a look at five standout reasons this rare deck deserves a place in your setup.
5. CD TRANSCRIPTION QUALITY

Spread across the first page of TD420’s manual is “CD Transcription Quality Cassette Deck.” It seems like everything from Harman Kardon is made with quality in mind, but in this cassette deck, special attention was made to the recording caliber in particular. It was engineered for a wide frequency response, low noise, and low distortion in order to produce high-fidelity recording from CDs and any other high-quality sources you have in mind.
As a companion to this “CD transcription quality,” they also included the CD Sync feature, which makes recording from a compatible Harman Kardon CD player a breeze (as you can simply connect this cassette deck directly to the CD player with the "Remote" jack on its rear panel).
Plus, this deck features Dolby HX (Headroom eXtension). Together with Dolby noise reduction, it provides a large improvement in signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range, allowing you to record at higher input levels for better signal quality without distortion. Dolby HX Pro operates automatically when recordings are made, resulting in higher-fidelity tapes.
4. FRONT PANEL

The front panel is the perfect example of how beautiful minimalist design can be.
First, the controls on the matte black panel were created with ergonomics in mind. Every button is precisely positioned with comfort and accuracy in mind, making recording and playback a breeze for seasoned audiophiles and newbie audio enthusiasts alike. Between the push buttons and the knobs, you get that tactile experience of twirling through the features and sound that you can only get from vintage equipment.
Second, the large fluorescent display lights up the front panel without being ostentatious. The display indicates function settings and signal levels in bright, clear letters and numbers. Short bars dance across the display during playback/recording, indicating the signal level. And it doesn’t matter if this unit is playing in a lit or a dim room: it still glows brilliantly!
3. INTRO SCAN

One of the most underrated features a cassette deck can have is “Intro Scan.” This lets the cassette deck locate the beginning of the recorded material and play the first 15 seconds of the song. The tape then advances to the beginning of the next track or segment, playing for 15 seconds before automatically moving on to the next.
In other words, Intro Scan lets you essentially preview recorded segments, allowing you to quickly find a desired song. Once you find the track or segment you’re searching for, you can hit “Play” to start listening to that song.
This feature is quicker and easier than fast-forwarding and rewinding, which is more of a guessing game. It's also incredibly handy for making mixed tapes.
2. EASY HEAD CLEANING

Another reason to invest in the HK TD420 is the surprisingly fun way to clean and demagnetize the tape heads.
Tape heads gradually pick up tape particles and magnetic fields, which can add noise to your cassettes and eventually get bad enough to partially erase what’s recorded on them. To prevent this, the heads need to be periodically cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and demagnetized.
On most cassette decks, the front door pops open, and you can reach in there to do so. But on this player, it’s a bit different: since this cassette deck doesn’t have the standard door, you can instead access the heads and capstan by popping off the little door on the top of the unit. Under that tiny access hatch, you can reach in with your cotton swabs and head demagnetizer to clean those heads. Opening this tiny hatch is also a great way to watch the cassette tape slide into the machine.
1. CASSETTE DRAWER

Hands down, the coolest part of this deck is the cassette tray. Unlike most cassette recorders, which have a door that opens out at an angle, this one has a tray just like you would see on a CD player. You hit the eject button, the tray slides out, and you insert your cassette tape lying down. A light touch of the finger will activate the closing mechanism, and the tray will close.
It’s also surprisingly quiet. While the solid clunkiness of most cassette decks is a vintage lover’s paradise, it’s also just as addicting to watch the smooth slide of the tray gliding with barely a sound.
Plus, with the cassette tray the way it is, how fun would it be to set this player atop a CD deck with a look similar enough that people would assume you have two CD players?
