From the first note, these speakers will win you over thanks to their impressive dynamic range, seamless soundstage, and incredible detail. They provide a liquid, musical sound that’ll have you reaching for another album to play before you even realize it. A great speaker for both audiophiles and music lovers, the Focal Aria 936 only gets more impressive when you know exactly what’s happening under the hood.
FRENCH KNOW-HOW
For those who may be unfamiliar with the brand, Focal has been designing and developing acoustic equipment since 1979. They’re based in Saint-Étienne, France, but Focal is recognized worldwide for their innovation and class-leading technologies. All of their sound equipment is built in-house, no outsourcing, which gives them complete control over every design, manufacture, and quality aspect.
They produce a range of incredible equipment, from speakers for cars and yachts to professional monitors to outdoor speakers. But their pièce de résistance is their collection of hi-fi speakers for home stereo and theater systems.
So with more than four decades under their belt, Focal has set out to be one of the world leaders in combining technology, craftsmanship, and unique materials into speakers that produce incredibly clean, natural, and authentic sound. And based on what we’ve heard from the Focal Aria 936? They’ve done all that and more.
THE DRIVERS
The Aria 936 floorstanding speakers use a unique blend of driver technology and material to perfect their sound. First, you have a one-inch aluminum/magnesium inverted dome tweeter, which uses inverted dome technology for optimal energy transfer and limited directivity. This tweeter also features lightweight Poron suspension; Poron, an open-cell polyrethane microcellular foam, improves damping and results in excellent stability and zero degradation over time. Plus, the tweeter is mounted on a waveguide plate that provides a stable soundstage so you get a silkier, more precise sound with greater harmonic richness - no matter where you sit.
Second, you have cone midrange and bass drivers made of one incredibly unique material - flax. Flax is an eco-textile with surprising structural properties; it is lightweight, stiff, and well-damped, resulting in greater neutrality and better audio definition. Focal’s ingenious design truly comes into play with their sandwich method: they place a layer of hollow flax fibers between two thin layers of fiberglass.
So, the Aria 936 speakers have three 6.5-inch flax bass drivers, a 6.5-inch flax midrange driver, and a 1-inch TNF inverted dome tweeter; they also sport a dual-port Powerflow system in the front for a more impactful sound. The result? A three-way bass-reflex floorstanding speaker with an elegant design and a small footprint.
THE CABINETS
The incredible drivers are packaged inside a sophisticated cabinet constructed of ultra-rigid MDF and designed with non-parallel side panels. This creates a vibration-resistant cabinet so you get a beautifully neutral sound and not that annoying boxy audio that many tower speakers are known for. It also features a unique floor-facing vent for increased depth.
Add to that a black high gloss finish and a leather-effect coating on the front and back, and you’re left with a simple, stylish design that screams quality.
A bonus? These speakers even come with a magnetic cloth frame - so the grills are removable and magnetic, which makes the speakers easier to maintain and means you don’t have to worry about those annoying pegs snapping if you pull off the cover wrong.
THE SPECIFICATIONS
The Aria 936 tower speakers boast a range of amazing technical specs as well. They have a 39 to 28,000Hz (±3dB) frequency response, and they offer 50 to 300 watts per channel, a sensitivity of 92dB, and an impedance of 8 ohms.
These aren’t small floor-standing speakers either: each one measures 11.6 inches by 14.7 inches by 45.2 inches (length by width by height) and weighs a whopping 64 pounds. It also features an aluminum alloy base, creating a stable foundation.
