HDMI 101: WHAT HDMI IS, WHAT IS DOES, AND WHY NEARLY EVERY MODERN DEVICE USES IT
A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO HDMI TYPES, BENEFITS, AND SUPPORTED DEVICES
Think about the last time you connected a gaming console to a TV, plugged a laptop into a monitor, or set up a streaming device. Chances are, you used an HDMI cable without giving it much thought. Despite being one of the most common connections found in modern electronics, many people don't know what HDMI actually stands for or how it works behind the scenes.
HDMI has become the standard for transmitting high-quality audio and video between devices, replacing a variety of older cables and connection types. From home theaters to gaming systems to computers, HDMI plays a critical role in delivering us the content we enjoy every day.
So in this guide, we'll break down what exactly HDMI is, the different types available, its key benefits, and the formats and devices it supports.
WHAT IS HDMI?
HDMI is a digital interface standard used to transmit high-quality audio and video signals between devices. Introduced in 2002, HDMI became the industry standard for connecting televisions, monitors, gaming consoles, computers, Blu-ray players, streaming devices, and home theater equipment.
Unlike older analog connections, HDMI carries both audio and video through a single cable, simplifying setup while delivering superior quality.
WHAT DOES HDMI STAND FOR?

“HDMI” stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. Let’s break that down a bit further:
High-Definition: Refers to its ability to support high-resolution video.
Multimedia: Indicates that it carries both audio and video signals.
Interface: Describes the connection between two electronic devices.
The technology was developed to replace multiple cables and older connection standards while providing a fully digital signal path.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HDMI CONNECTORS?
Not all HDMI connectors are created equal. They come in several sizes to accommodate different devices.
TYPE A (STANDARD)
Standard is the most common HDMI type you’ll run into. It was first released back in 2002 and has 19 pins. It’s common on TVs, monitors, desktop computers, Blu-ray players, and modern gaming consoles.
TYPE B (DUAL LINK)
Feel free to ignore this type. Called “Dual-Link,” it was used with high-resolution devices as it had ten more pins than the Standard connection. But as of 2021, it hasn’t been used in any products. You’re unlikely to run into this type in the wild.
TYPE C (MINI)
Known as HDMI Mini, this is simply a more compact version of the Standard HDMI; it has 19 pins as well. Type C is often used on portable devices like DSLR cameras, camcorders, and some tablets.
TYPE D (MICRO)
This is the smallest type of them all, measuring 6.4mm by 2.8mm, yet it retains the 19 pins of the other common types. Micro HDMI is found on smartphones, action cameras, and compact portable devices.
TYPE E (AUTOMOTIVE)
This is also a lesser-known one that can be largely ignored. It’s a rugged, specialized HDMI connector used to hook a video output device to an automotive entertainment system. It has a locking tab to keep the cable from vibrating loose, with a fully metal shell design that reduces electromagnetic interference.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF HDMI?
Over the years, HDMI has evolved to support higher resolutions, refresh rates, and advanced features.
| Verson | Key Features |
| HDMI 1.4 | Supports 4K at 30Hz, Ethernet over HDMI, and 3D video |
| HDMI 2.0 | Supports 4K at 60Hz and increased bandwidth |
| HDMI 2.1 | Supports 8K, 10K resolutions, 4K at 120Hz, VRR, and eARC |
Modern gaming systems and high-end displays typically use HDMI 2.1 to take advantage of higher frame rates and advanced gaming features.
WHAT DEVICES USE HDMI?

HDMI connectors of one type or another can be found on almost all modern devices, including:
Entertainment Devices
- Smart TVs
- Streaming media players
- Blu-ray and DVD players
- AV receivers
- Soundbars
Gaming Devices
- PlayStation consoles
- Xbox consoles
- Gaming PCs
- Handheld gaming systems with video output
Computer Equipment
- Desktop computers
- Laptops
- Monitors
- Docking stations
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HDMI?

There are several advantages of HDMI. For example, its convenience. My last article broke down the differences between composite and component; one downfall of those cables is that they need at least three separate cables to get both video and audio. But a single HDMI cable can transmit both audio and video, reducing cable clutter and making setup a breeze.
HDMI also allows for high picture and sound quality, delivering uncompressed digital signals that minimize signal degradation (which can happen with analog connections). Plus, it supports a wide range of video formats and resolutions, including 720p HD, 1080p Full HD, 4K Ultra HD, and 8K Ultra HD. It also supports a wide range of audio formats, like Dolby Digital, Dolby Atmos, DTS, and DTS:X, making it ideal for home theater and surround-sound systems.
You also get some cool advanced features. Modern HDMI standards support HDR (High Dynamic Range), Dolby Vision, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), and high frame rates for gaming. It also supports eARC. eARC, or Enhanced Audio Return Channel, was introduced in HDMI 2.1 and provides support for higher-quality audio bandwidth and speed.
SUMMARY
HDMI has become the universal standard for transmitting digital audio and video between devices. By combining high-quality audio, high-resolution video, and advanced features into a single connection, HDMI simplifies connectivity while supporting the demands of modern entertainment. Whether connecting a home theater system, gaming console, or computer monitor, HDMI remains one of the most popular and versatile standards available today.
