LISTEN TO THIS: 5.1 VS 7.1 CHANNELS OF SURROUND SOUND

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? WHICH ONE IS BEST FOR YOUR HOME THEATER SYSTEM?

Are you ready to experience a next-level sound system? One that immerses you in every movie and makes you feel like you're in the best seat of a theater? Of course you are!

But as you explore different audio systems, you'll find you’re faced with a classic dilemma: 5.1 surround sound versus 7.1 surround sound. Which is the best for your home? While it may seem like a simple numbers game, there's more to it than that. Before you make your decision, let's dive into the distinctions between these systems and how they'll elevate your sound experience!

WHAT ARE CHANNELS?

CHANNELS FOR A SPEAKER SURROUND SYSTEM

First, when we say a system has a certain number of channels of surround sound, what are we referring to? Well, the number of channels (3.1, 5.2, 7.1, 9.1, etc.) refers to the number of speakers that a receiver is capable of powering. For example, a 5.1-channel system powers 5 standard speakers and 1 subwoofer while a 7.2-channel system powers 7 standard speakers and 2 powered subwoofers.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

A 5.1-channel speaker system includes a front left, a front right, a center, a left surround, a right surround, and a subwoofer - totaling five speakers and a subwoofer. The front speakers are placed, as you’ve probably guessed, at the front of the room while the surrounds are placed on either side of the listening area; the center channel is usually placed under or above the television.

A 7.1-channel speaker system includes all the components of a 5.1 surround system but with two additional rear surround speakers. This gives you seven speakers and a subwoofer. The two additional surround speakers are typically placed behind you for a complete surround sound experience.

WHY CHOOSE A 5.1 SURROUND SYSTEM?

5.1 Surround Sound Speaker Placement
If you’re looking for a home theater system you can set up yourself, a 5.1 surround system is ideal. It has fewer wires, so it’s simpler to connect the speakers to the receiver. Fewer speakers also means you can either save some cash or put the extra money towards higher quality speakers and cables. You’ll also find there are more tutorials on YouTube and troubleshooting tips available for 5.1-channel systems than there are for 7.1 systems. Besides, 7.1 systems are useless in rooms smaller than 350 sq. ft. (because the rear surrounds will dominate the front speakers), so it’s better to invest in a 5.1 surround system if you’re tight on space and simply don’t have the room for rear speakers (which are typically placed behind the couch or sitting area).

Plus, 5.1 systems provide a solid theater sound, so you don’t have to worry about quality; a 5.1 system is worlds better than simply listening to the speaker from your television or even a soundbar. It also supports Dolby Digital and DTS, and you’ll get low-frequency effects through the subwoofer. It’s easier to find content that’s compatible with 5.1 systems too, since 5.1-based movies and music are more available on streaming services and through DVDs and Blu-rays. What’s more, there is quite the array of options available for 5.1 systems with plenty of brands and designs to choose from. There are more 5.1-channel surround systems available in a complete set, so you don’t have to mix and match speakers from different kits unless you want to.

Simply put, if you’re wanting a basic channel configuration, go with a 5.1 surround system.

WHY CHOOSE A 7.1 SURROUND SYSTEM?

5.1 Surround Sound Speaker Placement

If you’re looking for a home theater system that will provide you with incredibly detailed sound, a 7.1 surround system is best. With two additional speakers, a 7.1-channel setup will give you more precise sound with maximum channels. It offers more control over your audio, so you can adjust it more specifically to exactly how you want. 7.1 surround also supports Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS HD Master, which were designed to add increased quality to home theater systems with lossless audio channels.

Moreover, it allows for maximum configuration and customization options. 7.1 channels support bi-amping when re-assigning amplifiers and additional amps to improve audio quality. It’s also better for bigger spaces. Unlike 5.1 surround systems, 7.1 is better for enhanced sound for larger rooms, so you don’t have to worry about everyone being able to hear the audio from the dialog and music when watching a movie together.

So if you’re wanting a system that gives you more control and fine-tuning, go with a 7.1 surround system.

SUMMARY

Both 5.1 and 7.1 surround systems provide an immersive audio experience! No matter which you choose, you’re sure to enjoy your movies far better than ever before. It just depends on your budget, personal preference, and space. If you have a smaller room with less space behind the listening position and you don’t want to spend loads of time choosing speakers and connecting them, a 5.1-channel configuration is probably best. If you’d rather have a home theater system that will surround you with sound you can precisely tweak and fine tune, then a 7.1-channel setup is probably the way to go.

And remember to choose your receiver based on your ideal channel configuration. If you’re looking to go for a 7.2 surround system, a receiver that has terminals for only five speakers and one subwoofer won’t cut it.
