REWIND AND PLAY: REDISCOVERING THE AKAI GX-F44R CASSETTE DECK
WHY THE AKAI GXF44R STILL IMPRESSES AUDIOPHILES TODAY
“Tremendous Tape Tech Triumph.” That’s the alliterative title that best describes Akai’s GX-F44R. This cassette deck is a showcase of both style and function thanks to its distinctly high-end 1980s aesthetic and its commitment to sound fidelity and build quality. Even over forty years later, the GX-F44R lives up to Akai’s name.
That’s why we wanted to take a closer look at the GX-F44R’s heart, mind, and body - ahem, we mean features, performance, and functions. So without further ado, let’s dive in!
FEATURES AND PERFORMANCE
The Akai GX-F44R is a 20-pound cassette deck that blends clever design with stellar performance. At its heart lies Akai’s Twin Field Super GX head, a tough and precise glass and crystal ferrite marvel that performs like a three-head system. It also features a quick reverse mechanism, which flips tapes in the blink of an eye with a 0.5-second auto-reverse, so your music barely misses a beat.
It’s also packed with convenience features that make it as practical as it is high-performing. Intro Scan plays the first ten seconds of each track for a quick content preview, Blank Search automatically locates unrecorded sections on the tape, and Rec Cancel lets you rewind to the beginning of an unwanted recording segment and pause (which is super handy for re-recording).
But how does it sound? In one word: incredible. Particularly when paired with the right amp, the GXF44R cassette player and recorder doles out the warm audio that you’ve come to expect from analog. Two smooth DC motors (one for the capstan and one for the reels) keep the tape gliding perfectly, while you have the option of Dolby B or C noise reduction during recording and playback to hush unwanted hiss.
THE FRONT PANEL
This Akai’s front panel is a silver pool of goodies that range from finger-tingling controls to mouth-watering features. Starting at the left, we have a red Power button stationed at the bottom with a black Eject button at the top; in between sits a switch for timer start options (Rec/Off/Play). Then there’s the front-loading cassette compartment with some super cool green directional arrows below it to indicate whether the tape is playing/recording in reverse or in forward position.
In the center section rests the main transport functions, including Auto Mute, Pause, Record, Rewind, Stop, Play, and Fast-Forward – all clearly labeled and easily accessible. Above those fun push buttons is a brilliant green tape counter, a Memory on/off button, and the options to start an Intro Scan and a Blank Search. And on top of that is your Reverse Selector (where you can switch Auto Reverse on and off) and a beautiful LED peak meter that provides audio levels in real time.
On the far right is a large rotary knob to adjust the main recording levels and a switch to toggle between Dolby B and C noise reduction (or neither). Underneath sits the headphones jack (making it easy to monitor recordings), a volume output control, and dual ¼” microphone inputs.
Overall, the layout is clean, intuitive, and functionally rich – designed to give users maximum control over their cassette recordings while maintaining a refined, audiophile-friendly look.
THE REAR PANEL
The rear panel is as straightforward as you can get in a vintage cassette deck. First, it includes the standard RCA line input and output jacks for connecting to other audio components, allowing recording from and playback to an external amplifier or receiver. Then there's an 8-pin DIN connector for Akai's optional (but handy!) RC-21 wired remote control.
