Two transports in one chassis: a six-disc magazine CD changer and a full-logic auto-reverse cassette recorder that dubs straight from disc to tape at the press of one button. Working examples are getting scarce, largely because the tape mechanism inside is not the kind that survives neglect — this one is tested end to end, cleaned, and demagnetized.

BSR built the MCD-8050 for a moment that didn't last long. In 1990, plenty of people owned a CD collection and a cassette collection and wanted one box that handled both — not a stack of separates. What came out of it was a single-chassis combo with a six-disc cartridge changer on one side and a recording cassette deck on the other, sharing a display and a set of outputs. Almost nobody else made this, and the ones that shipped were mostly sold through mail-order catalogs rather than hi-fi dealers, which is why you rarely see them today.

What This Unit Does

  • Loads six CDs at once in a removable magazine, so an evening of music goes in before you sit down. The disc program is fully programmable, with shuffle and repeat.
  • Records from CD to cassette with synchro dubbing — one button starts both transports in sync. This is the reason the combo format existed, and it is still the fastest way to make a tape from a disc.
  • Runs a full-logic auto-reverse transport with Dolby B and C noise reduction and automatic tape-type detection, so chrome and metal tapes bias correctly without you setting anything.
  • Lets you program the CD side while a tape is still playing, then switch sources when the tape ends.
  • Finds tracks on tape by itself with automatic music search, instead of hunting with fast-forward.
  • Sets recording level manually with an LED bar-graph meter, which matters if you are archiving tapes to a computer and want headroom under control.

Condition

Good — a 7 out of 10. Expect visible cosmetic wear consistent with a unit from 1990: surface scratches and scuffs on the chassis and top cover, and light handling marks. All lettering is legible and all display segments light. Nothing is cracked, missing, or mismatched. This is an honest working component, not a showpiece.

Testing and Service

Every function on both transports was tested and confirmed working: CD magazine load and eject, disc cueing and tracking across all six positions, tape play and record, fast-forward, rewind, auto-reverse, Dolby B and C, automatic tape selection, automatic music search, synchro dubbing, the display and level meter, the rear line outputs, and the front headphone jack.

Service was maintenance rather than repair. The laser assembly was cleaned, the tape heads were cleaned and demagnetized, and the unit was cleaned inside and out. No parts were replaced.

What's Included

  • BSR MCD-8050 combo deck
  • One 6-disc CD magazine with all slots intact
  • Attached power cord

Not included: no remote control, no RCA interconnects, no manual, no original box, no second magazine. The CD side is fully usable from the front panel with the included magazine. If you want remote operation, the original BSR MCD-8050 remote is available separately — we stock it.

My Sony 400 disc player stopped working. I watched YouTube videos and came across this website. Since 90% of failures are the belts I decided to try to fix it myself with the help of the video. It was the belts and after installing them it works great again. I received the belts really quickly and with no prior knowledge took the case off with help from the video and installed the belts myself. So happy to have my player working again. I will always contact Spencertified for my parts and repair needs. Thanks so much. Try them, you won't be disappointed.

Spencer and Amy helped us find 40 or so speakers to build a wall out of them at a restaurant and were super helpful finding and loading up all of the speakers. The wall turned out great and would definitely recommend them for anything sound!

Spencer was super helpful and knowledgeable when I visit him. I experienced a slight issue with some hardware and he was more than willing to make it right.
