Nakamichi CDPlayer2 — MusicBank 7-Disc CD Player, Serviced, 1990-91
Nakamichi's MusicBank players do something almost nothing else does: hold six discs inside the machine while still loading and playing like an ordinary single-disc player. This one has had the laser assembly recapped and the optics cleaned, and every function was confirmed working.
The Nakamichi CDPlayer2 is one of the few genuinely original CD players of the early
1990s. From the front it looks like a conventional single-disc machine with an unusually
clean control layout. Behind the drawer sits a fixed internal magazine that holds six
discs, giving you seven-disc capacity counting the one on the tray, with none of the
caddy-fumbling or mechanical clatter of magazine changers. It was Nakamichi doing what
Nakamichi did: solving a problem differently and building it properly.
What This Unit Does
- Load discs one at a time through a normal drawer. Press STORE and the mechanism files
the disc into the magazine and reopens for the next one.
- Play a single disc with exactly the operability of a standard player, or run all seven
in sequence, random, or programmed order.
- 3-inch discs play without an adaptor in single mode.
- Coaxial digital output feeds an external DAC. Fixed and variable RCA outputs let you run
straight to a power amp if you want.
- Headphone jack with motorized volume, which also governs the variable line output.
- Memory Synchro Recording drives a remote-equipped Nakamichi cassette deck and fits your
chosen tracks into the available tape length.
Condition
Cosmetic condition is good, 7 out of 10. Expect visible wear consistent with a
thirty-plus-year-old component. The photos are of the actual unit you will receive and
show the marks accurately.
Testing and Service
The laser assembly has been recapped, the optics cleaned, and general service performed.
All functions were tested and confirmed working: single-disc play, STORE loading into the
magazine, playback from all six magazine slots, track skip and search, display, fixed and
variable line outputs, coaxial digital output, headphone jack and motorized volume, and
remote operation.
What's Included
- Nakamichi CDPlayer2 CD player
- Remote control (remote variant only)
- Power cable
Not included: original box, owner's manual, RCA cables, digital coaxial cable.
Note that the CDPlayer2 has a deliberately minimal front panel. Programming, direct track
access via keypad, search, display modes, and Memory Synchro all live on the remote. The
player works without it, but the remote variant gets you the full feature set.
