Sony CDP-C705 — 5-Disc CD Changer, Optical Out, Recapped, 1990
This one got a full power supply recap, not just a belt swap — the 35-year-old electrolytics are out and fresh parts are in. Add an optical digital output that most carousel changers of this era never had, and you have a five-disc deck that can still anchor a real system.
Sony built the CDP-C705 in 1990, near the top of the consumer carousel line, and it shows in the connections on the back panel. Five discs, an optical digital output, both fixed and variable analog outputs, and a level-controlled headphone jack — this was a changer aimed at people running an actual stereo system, not a background-music box. Three and a half decades later, that feature set is exactly why it is still worth buying.
What This Unit Does
- Holds five discs in a rotating carousel; select any disc from the front panel or remote without unloading the others
- Optical digital output sends the raw bitstream to an outboard DAC or a receiver's digital input, letting you bypass the player's analog stage entirely
- Fixed line outputs feed a preamp or receiver normally; the separate variable outputs let the player drive a power amp directly with no preamp in the chain
- Headphone jack with its own level control for private listening without powering up the rest of the system
- Program, shuffle, and repeat playback for building a set across all five discs
Condition
Good, with visible cosmetic wear consistent with age — light marks and handling wear on the chassis and faceplate. This is an honest driver-quality example, not a display piece. Display and all controls are present and legible.
