Harman/Kardon FL8400 — 5-Disc CD Changer, Optical Out, Remote, 1994
The power supply on this FL8400 has been fully recapped — not just belted and cleaned, but re-capped — which is the difference between a changer that works today and one that keeps working. Optical digital output, working original remote, and Harman/Kardon's dual 1-bit converter that earned this player a reputation well above its price class.
Harman/Kardon built the FL8400 during the era when five-disc carousels were everywhere, but this one was voiced by a company that cared more about the analog output stage than the feature list. It uses a dual 1-bit D/A converter with 8× oversampling, and owners have consistently rated it as sounding better than its category suggests. The optical digital output also makes it useful well beyond its original purpose — feed an outboard DAC, a modern receiver, or a computer interface for archiving discs, and the FL8400 becomes a transport rather than a dead-end.
What This Unit Does
- Holds five CDs in a single rotary carousel tray, front-loading and rack-friendly
- Disc exchange lets you swap idle discs while another one is still playing, so music never stops
- Optical digital output passes the bitstream untouched to an external DAC or receiver, bypassing the internal converter entirely if you prefer
- Program, repeat, and random playback across all five discs
- Front headphone jack with its own dedicated level control — usable as a standalone listening station without powering up an amplifier
- Analog RCA line output for connection to any receiver, integrated amp, or preamp
Condition
Good, 7/10. Visible cosmetic wear consistent with a unit of this age — light scuffs and handling marks on the chassis and faceplate. All controls are present and functional, and the display reads clearly. This is an honest working-condition example, not a showpiece.
Testing & Service
Serviced in-house before listing. The power supply has been recapped, the laser assembly cleaned, and the drive belts replaced — the three things that take an FL8400 from intermittent to reliable. Perished belts and a dirty lens are the two documented failure modes on this chassis, and both have been addressed.
All functions were confirmed working: tray open and close, carousel indexing across all five positions, disc reading and tracking, disc exchange during playback, programming, repeat, random, display, headphone output and level control, analog RCA output on both channels, and optical digital output. The original remote was tested and confirmed working across its functions.
