SUMMARY
Whenever two societies operate on different level of symbol-making, misunderstanding and conflict are almost inevitable. In the United States, such differences in symbolic language have plagued the relationship between the sate and the churches and created awkward situations for those who want to be true to both.
According to William Johnson Everett, the image of "God's kingdom" and the notion of "church" and "salvation" that flow from it are at profound variance with the American principles of democracy and federalism. He shows how these symbols grew out of historical experience and became attached to the ecclesial and civil societies at different moments in time. He proposes that symbolic language on both sides needs to be reshaped if he two societies hop to have a useful dialogue.
