Most people shopping for a VHS deck end up choosing between two bad options: a basic consumer machine that plays tapes and nothing more, or a professional S-VHS editing deck that costs several times as much and is increasingly hard to find serviced. The JVC HR-VP720U sits in between, and for a lot of buyers it is the more sensible choice.

What makes it worth stepping up to

This deck carries two controls that almost never appear on ordinary consumer VCRs, and both
come straight from the professional side of the catalog.

- A jog/shuttle dial, on the front panel and on the remote. Scrub frame by frame, vary search
  speed by hand. Finding a specific moment in a two-hour home video becomes a five-second job
  instead of a five-minute one. This is the single feature people miss most when they go back
  to a basic deck.
- Manual audio recording level control. Set levels by hand instead of trusting automatic gain.
  If your source material has uneven volume, this is the difference between a usable transfer
  and one that pumps and breathes.

Where it stops, and this matters

The HR-VP720U gives you the control layout of a professional deck, not the video processing.
There is no line time base corrector and no digital noise reduction. If you are doing archival
transfer work on damaged or unstable tapes and you specifically need a TBC, you want a full
S-VHS editing deck and you should buy one. For everything short of that - watching a tape
collection, straightforward digitizing of reasonably healthy tapes, general playback and
recording - this deck does the job with better ergonomics than anything else near it.

The rest of what it does

- Four heads and Hi-Fi stereo audio deliver clean still frame and slow motion, and proper
  stereo separation on Hi-Fi encoded tapes.
- SQPB playback means S-VHS cassettes will play in this machine. Read the next line carefully:
  they play at standard VHS resolution, not full S-VHS resolution, and the deck records
  standard VHS only. This is not a Super VHS recorder.
- The Ultra Spec Drive transport moves through rewind, fast forward, and stop-to-play
  transitions noticeably faster than a typical deck of the period.

Condition

Very good, rated 7.5 out of 10. Expect light cosmetic wear consistent with a machine of this
age - the sort of surface marks that are visible on close inspection but not distracting in a
rack. Please review the photos, which show the actual unit you will receive.

Testing and Service

Belts have been replaced. The audio and video heads have been cleaned, and the mode switch
has been cleaned as well - that last one is worth noting, since a dirty mode switch is a
common source of erratic transport behavior on decks of this vintage and is the sort of thing
a quick bench test will not catch. The unit was tested and confirmed fully functional, and it
is currently in active daily use rather than sitting on a shelf after a single pass. Nothing
is sold as-is here and nothing is being represented as untested.
