Pioneer PL-740 Quartz-Direct Drive Fully Automatic Turntable (1983)
The Pioneer PL-740 is a quartz-locked direct drive turntable, designed for precision playback and ease of use. As a fully automatic deck, it handles cueing, start, and return at the push of a button, while its quartz-controlled direct drive motor ensures highly stable speed accuracy. This model was originally equipped with the Pioneer PC-41MC moving coil cartridge, fitted with a 0.3 × 0.7 mil elliptical diamond stylus. The MC design offers excellent tracking, extended frequency response, and smooth, detailed sound reproduction—making the PL-740 a strong performer among 1980s audiophile turntables. The removable headshell also allows for future cartridge upgrades or replacements.
