Belts replaced, laser cleaned, transport lubricated — the three things that actually go wrong on a carousel changer, already addressed. This one has the coaxial digital output the DCM-270 before it didn't, so it works as a straight transport into any modern DAC or receiver.

The Denon DCM-280 is a five-disc carousel changer from Denon's early-2000s lineup, built for people who want to load an evening's worth of music and leave it alone. It handles standard CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and MP3-encoded discs, and unlike the DCM-270 it replaced, it has a coaxial digital output — which means it still earns a rack slot today as a transport feeding a modern DAC or AV receiver.

What This Unit Does

• Coaxial digital output lets you bypass the internal converters entirely and use the DAC in your receiver or a standalone unit. This is the feature that keeps the DCM-280 relevant.
• MP3 CD playback means one burned disc can hold hours of material — practical for background music in a shop, studio, or storefront.
• Five-disc carousel with dual-direction rotation. Load five, program up to 32 tracks across all of them, or use one of three random modes.
• Denon documented this model with a Multilevel Noise Shaping DAC and an 8x oversampling digital filter.
• Front-panel headphone jack with remote-adjustable level.
• Synchro jack for synchronized recording with a compatible Denon cassette deck.

Note on what this model is not: the DCM-280 does not decode HDCD and does not have Remote Control IN/OUT jacks. Those belonged to the step-up DCM-380, and listings for the two get mixed up constantly. This does not play DVDs.

Condition

Good, roughly 8 out of 10. Light cosmetic wear consistent with age and normal use — minor marks on the chassis and faceplate, nothing that affects operation.

Tested and confirmed working: powers on, loads and plays discs in all five carousel positions, tray opens and closes cleanly, carousel indexes accurately in both directions, display reads track and time information correctly, both analog channels pass signal, headphone jack functions, and the remote pairs and controls disc and track selection.

Not individually bench-tested: coaxial digital output and MP3 CD-R playback. Both are covered by the warranty below.

A note on the remote: the DCM-280 operates fine from the front panel, but the remote carries controls the front panel does not, including counter-clockwise carousel rotation, direct disc and track access, and headphone volume. If you already have a working remote and you're replacing a failed unit, the no-remote option saves you seventy dollars. If you don't have one, originals are not easy to find separately.
