Technics SL-PD887 — 5-Disc CD Changer, MASH 1-Bit DAC, 1995-98
Fresh belts and a cleaned laser on a Technics carousel that was already one of the more durable changers of its generation. This one loads, indexes, and cues without hesitation across all five positions.
Technics built the SL-PD887 during the mid-90s stretch when carousel changers had stopped being a novelty and started being engineered properly. Five discs, a rotary tray you can reload while music is still playing, and MASH 1-bit conversion doing the digital-to-analog work. It is a straightforward, well-made component that does its one job for decades if the belts get looked after — which they have been here.
What This Unit Does
- Holds five discs in a rotary carousel and lets you swap the four idle discs without interrupting playback, so a listening session never has to stop for disc management
- MASH 1-bit D/A conversion, Technics' delta-sigma implementation, which trades the hard edge of early multi-bit players for a smoother, easier top end
- Sequential, program, random, and spiral play modes
- 32-step program memory, plus the ability to delete up to 32 tracks you would rather skip
- ID scan for locating a track quickly across loaded discs
Condition
Very good, rated 8 out of 10. Light cosmetic wear consistent with a unit of this age — no significant damage called out. Display is intact and lettering is legible.
Testing & Service
Belts replaced and the laser assembly cleaned. After service, the unit was tested and confirmed working: all five carousel positions load and play, discs track from start to finish, the carousel indexes correctly, change-while-play functions, the display reads accurately, the analog RCA output passes signal on both channels, and the remote pairs and controls the unit.
