Fresh belts, a cleaned laser, and the original Yamaha remote — this is a serviced CDC-697 with the piece most surviving units are missing. Several functions on this model are remote-only, so a matching handset is the difference between full control and half of it.
Yamaha built the CDC-697 for people who wanted a changer without accepting changer compromises. Most five-disc carousels of the era clattered, hunted for tracks, and made you choose between convenience and sound. This one didn't. It pairs a genuinely quiet transport with an optical digital output, so it works equally well as a casual background-music machine or as a transport feeding a good outboard DAC.
What This Unit Does
- Holds five discs in a full-opening drawer that exposes all five positions at once, so you can see and reach every slot without cycling through them
- PlayXchange lets you swap out an idle disc while another keeps playing, which means the music never stops during a long listening session
- Reads CD, CD-R and CD-RW, so burned discs and homemade compilations work alongside pressed albums
- CD Text display shows disc and track information on releases that carry it
- Optical digital output feeds an external DAC or receiver directly, bypassing the internal converters entirely if you prefer
- Analog RCA outputs for straightforward hookup to any receiver or integrated amp
- 40-track programmable playback, plus repeat, random and intro scan modes
Condition
Good, rated 7 out of 10. Expect light cosmetic wear consistent with a unit of this age — minor marks on the chassis and faceplate visible under direct light. Nothing that affects operation.
Testing and Service
The drive belts have been replaced and the laser assembly cleaned. After service, all functions were tested and confirmed working. The unit loads, indexes, reads and plays as it should.
