Sony CDP-C225 — 5-Disc Carousel CD Changer Player, Serviced, 1992
Fresh belts and a cleaned laser assembly on the exact mechanism that takes these units out of service — this CDP-C225 has already had the work most surviving examples still need.
The Sony CDP-C225 is a five-disc carousel changer from 1992, built in Japan
during the stretch when Sony was still putting real converter hardware and metal
chassis work into mid-line components. It loads five discs on a single rotating
platter, which means you swap CDs while the music keeps playing instead of
stopping the party to reload. For anyone with a shelf of discs and no interest in
babysitting a single-tray player, this is the format that solved it.
What This Unit Does
- High Density Linear Converter DAC and Digital Servo System, Sony's mid-tier
conversion package of the era. It is the reason a 1992 changer still holds its
own against a modern budget player.
- Five-disc carousel with automatic disc loading. Change four discs while the
fifth plays.
- 32-step programming with a 20-track front-panel display showing what is
programmed, what has played, and what is left. Genuinely useful for building a
long sequence across multiple discs.
- Continuous, shuffle, and repeat play modes.
- Front headphone jack with its own level control, so it works as a standalone
desk player with no amplifier in the chain.
- Handles 8 cm (3-inch) singles in addition to standard discs.
- RCA line output to any receiver, integrated amp, or powered speaker pair.
Condition
Very good, rated 8 out of 10. Light cosmetic wear consistent with a unit of this
age, nothing that draws the eye. Display is clear and complete. Chassis and front
panel present well.
Testing and Service
All functions were tested and confirmed working: tray operation, carousel
rotation and disc selection across all five positions, tracking and playback,
line output, headphone output and level control, display, and the programming,
shuffle, and repeat functions.
Service performed: drive belts replaced and laser assembly cleaned. Dried belts
and a hazed laser are the two failures that sideline these changers, and both
have been addressed here.
